The Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce announced today that Brian Scarborough, co-owner of Scarborough Insurance, will lead the Putting Children First Infrastructure Investment Initiative (i3).

As chair of the steering committee, Scarborough will lead an 11-member committee, which will represent a diverse group of stakeholders including the African American Accountability Alliance, the Alachua County Chapter of the NAACP, the Builders Association of North Central Florida, the Alachua Chamber of Commerce and other entities.

Scarborough said his desire to serve as i3 steering committee chair stems from his vision for his two young daughters.

“I am a third generation Gator, and my wife, Erin, and I love raising our daughters here in Gainesville,” said Scarborough. “We hope they have even brighter opportunities to work and raise their families here, and the best way to ensure that is to come together to create the best possible school facilities, safe roadways and expansive recreational facilities, and i3 can move that hope forward.”

Announced last month by the Gainesville Chamber, i3 is a citizen-driven process that will produce a balanced ballot initiative for voters to consider during a future countywide election. The Chamber’s policy is that taxpayer-funded infrastructure initiatives should make repairing/constructing K-12 public schools, fixing roads and improving parks and recreational facilities top priorities.

Scarborough is the co-owner, with his father, Rick, of Scarborough Insurance, having joined the company in 1996 after graduating from the University of Florida. Committed to giving back to his community, Scarborough has served on the Gainesville Area Chamber Council for Economic Outreach (CEO), the Advisory Board of Gateway Bank, the Gainesville Alachua County Regional Airport Authority and the boards of Tyler’s Hope for a Dystonia Cure and Peaceful Paths. Scarborough successfully completed the Business Community Coalition’s Public Leadership Institute (PLI).

The i3 steering committee will have its first meeting by January 2017, host the first of several public input workshops on February 7, 2017 and produce a report by summer of 2017.
